  18. <p>     After Deng Xiaoping and Jimmy Carter finished their official
  19. White House talks in 1979, China's Vice Premier turned to other
  20. matters. He was, said the former President in last week's issue
  21. of Christian Century, "infatuated" with Carter's religious
  22. faith. The Communist leader even promised to permit Bibles back
  23. into China and see about legal changes to allow religious
  24. freedom. But when Carter asked if he'd consent to the return
  25. of Western missionaries, Deng refused. They were "arrogant,"
  26. he said, and had caused "great disturbances."
